PC Buyers Guide

Whether you are buying a replacement computer or starting from scratch, with so many models to choose from, where do you start? Well, with our help, the right place for you to start is here.

First things first, the main consideration in any purchase, including your PC is budget. Deciding how much you want to spend will ultimately determine which machine you will purchase. One major factor for you to be aware of these days is that the price of desktop computers with high specifications cost much less than a few years ago, so you will get much more for your money.

We have broken this down into two areas for you, home and family use (including study and home based or small office work) and multimedia/gaming needs. These are general recommendations are not meant to be suited to all requirements. If you have a specific question, why not post a question in our Questions Answered Section.

Home and family PC Specification (minimum recommendations)

This spec will be ideal for general home use, browsing the internet, using social networks, school work, study and some gaming.

 Key features we suggest are:

  • Dual core processor (remember, high spec costs less now…)
  • 1gb of DDR memory (minimum)
  • 250gb hard drive
  • 128MB graphics card from ATI or Nvidia
  • CD or DVD burner
  • 17″ or 19″ TFT
  • 5.1 speaker system
  • 10/100 Ethernet port for plugging into the wireless network
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home / Microsoft Vista Home Basic
  • Microsoft Office Home & Student 2007

A year or two ago a machine like this would have cost you in excess of £1000! A similar machine to this spec can now be bought for under £400.00! Don’t think it is possible? Click here now for more details on the power packed machine for £399.00

Multimedia and Gaming

Home entertainment PCs integrate all your media into one unit - you can watch and record TV and DVDs, surf the web, download and listen to MP3s, and share your photos! These PCs are often styled to look good in your lounge and may include Microsoft Media Center. No more jumbles of wires when you want to watch home movies! No more messy stacks of CDs! No cramming into a spare room to look at digital photos on a small monitor! A home entertainment PC will do it all, as well as all the other usual tasks such as word processing, emailing or surfing the web.

Key features we suggest are

  • High-end Quad processor (games will perform much better under this environment)
  • 3GB of DDR memory
  • 320GB to 500GB hard drive(s)
  • 256MB graphics card (minimum)
  • TV tuner card
  • DVD-recordable drive
  • 19″ TFT or larger, or connect to your LCD/ plasma TV
  • Wireless keyboard & mouse
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home / Microsoft Vista Home Basic / Windows XP Media Center
